Midwifery care or Physician care?

There are two options for a medical care provider: a midwife or a doctor/physician.

A midwife might be a great option if you are interested in holistic care, a physiological birth without pain medication and are considered low risk.

Some important things to know about Midwifery Care in Montreal:

Midwives are health care professionals with education and training in following pregnancy, birth and baby. They are a regulated profession in Quebec.

Midwives are mandated to provide healthcare for low risk pregnancies only. If a pregnancy becomes high risk at any time, care will be transferred to a doctor. The term low risk can mean different things so it's worth looking into if you are at all curious about midwifery care.

Midwives are holistic care practitioners. Expect longer prenatal appointments and more time spent on aspects of emotional well being.

Midwives help prepare you to cope with your labour.

Midwives can NOT provide pharmacological pain relief during labour (ie. epidural analgesia).

Midwives support physiological birth, care would need to be transferred for medical induction or pharmacological pain relief.

Midwives follow your baby for the first 6 weeks of baby's life.

Midwives can catch babies at a maison de naissance*, in your home or at an associated hospital.

*A "maison de naissance" (or Birth House), is an out of hospital birth center run by certified Midwives. The island of Montreal currently has five Maisons de Naissance; in Pointe Claire, Cote des Neiges, Le Plateau, Montreal-Est and Montreal-North. You can also be followed by midwives at the clinique communautaire Pointe-Saint-Charles however they don't currently have a maison de naissance so birth would take place either at home or in hospital

Midwives are covered under RAMQ.

If you’d like to have (or are even considering!) a Midwife follow your pregnancy, drop everything and call the numbers below or fill out the corresponding forms NOW!!!

Spots for midwives fill up fast, in Montreal the demand far outweighs the supply of midwives so the earlier you call the better. Each maison de naissance is a different group of midwives and has a different wait list so you would need to contact each one individually to get on all of the lists.
